The Story of Wordcrafters, Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Dance like everybody’s watching! (Like an introvert, basically)

In the next chapter of Wordcrafters’ story, the call to adventure has been asked and answered, and the enthusiastic band of characters has left the comfort of home to begin making their way into new lands and uncharted territories.

In spring 2014, we hosted our first conference in downtown Eugene, featuring nationally-known authors Elizabeth George and Terry Brooks.

An introvert’s ball and special cocktails menu got even the quietest writers out on the dance floor.

“My favorite part was the introvert’s ball,” says co-founder Liz Cratty. “I wore a gown and my husband wore a tux. We danced our butts off.”

The conference included the awards ceremony for Wordcrafters’ first student short story contest, which later became Fiction Fantastic (and this year’s competition is still taking entries from Lane County students in grades K-12 until Jan 13!)

It was such an all-around hit that local writers begged for year-round programming. Wordcrafters responded with the Reading Like a Writer book club for adults and week-long creative writing summer camps for young writers to beat back the summer brain drain.

Programs like these continue to this day–thanks to the support of our donors! Will you help us continue to offer year-round programming for writers of all ages?
