Sci-Fi & Fantasy Short Stories

Image features a headshot of a smiling Nina Kiriki Hoffman in a bucket hat, behind this is a fantastical picture of a young child in pigtails, arms outstretched, with light tendrils emanating from their fingertips in blue and green zig zags. The child is between two arched buildings.

Have science fiction and fantasy movies, TV shows, books, and comics ignited your imagination? Would you like to create worlds and people of your own?

Explore strange new worlds. Imagine people with powers. Investigate alien encounters.

In this class, we’ll look at storytelling basics — characterization, plot, setting (including world-building), beginnings and endings, revision and marketing, all with a fantastic flare.

We’ll also use twenty-sided dice to roll up ingredients to get your mind cooking up stories.

In class, you’ll be doing in-class writing exercises, discussing aspects of fiction, sharing some short pieces, and giving and receiving feedback.

Nina offers extensive and thoughtful feedback on your work that you won’t want to miss.

Sign up and let your imagination out to play!
