Join us for our annual sci-fi fantasy story weekend with Nina Kiriki Hoffman! Member registration opens January 15, 2020. General registration opens February 1, 2020.
Gather together with fourteen other writers in a beautiful riverfront resort for a weekend of science fiction and fantasy writing. From high fantasy sword and sorcery, to the dark realms of Twilight Zone-ish work, to elves, gnomes, and trolls of all imagination, each participant will write a complete short story in twenty-four hours.
All writers are welcome, from the beginner to the accomplished short story writer or novelist. The instructor will be there to help with plot, story structure, or character development. This is a fun way to get started in short story writing, and a good way to meet other writers working in the same genre.
Tuition includes all instruction and sleeping accommodations. Meals are not included. However, most folks participate in a volunteer-coordinated potluck.
We will get together Friday night after dinner to talk about ghosts and other spooky things and the structure of short stories. And then. . . ready, set, write! The point is to write a complete science fiction or fantasy story by 7 pm on Saturday, when we will gather together to read our stories. The instructor is available to help you with your stories, and to talk privately about your writing. We hold very casual class time during meals. Sunday morning we give light feedback/critiques on the stories we heard Saturday night. (Don’t be nervous—everything is first draft.)
Sci-Fi Fantasy Weekend will be held at the McKenzie River Mountain Resort, Blue River, Oregon (43 miles East of Eugene). Attendance is limited to 16 participants, plus instructor.
Accommodations are in four lovely 3-bedroom cabins. Each cabin has two bedrooms with one queen-size bed and one bedroom with twin beds. Cabins have full kitchens and baths, linens and towels provided. Just bring your toiletries, writing materials, and nibbles. There is a coffee pot in each cabin; if you’re a coffee drinker, you might want to bring your own coffee.
The weekend begins at 4 pm Friday, April 24, 2020 and goes until noon on Sunday, April 26.
