Suspense is the feeling of holding your breath, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Take a second to picture that moment. Notice how your body tenses; you may clench your teeth or curl your toes up. Make a note for later.

Instill fear and suspense in any situation—be they ordinary or extraordinary (horror or suspense is not genre-locked). Any setting can be turned into a nightmare or send shivers up your spine with language. Upset the balance of your characters, and use their emotional responses to put your readers on the edge of their seats.

We will look at examples from local indie authors, with an emphasis on the realism of physical reactions to the situations, as well as the ramifications of moments that follow. (Maybe in a moment of panic, your character tenses and punches what ends up being a wall, not a ghost–and this decision follows the character through the book in the form of an aching hand, and oh no, is that a little blood dripping–which makes them easier to find by the antagonist).

Elle will also touch on how to weave disability and trauma into the genres of horror and suspense in a respectful way, and utilize symptoms in a way that doesn’t feel horrible but instead feels representative to the community.

Using some writing prompts, we’ll then create our own scenes!

What is Write Club for Grown Ups? Write Club for Grown Ups is a monthly workshop that offers the opportunity for grown ups to explore various genres and topics in writing with local teaching artists throughout the year. (Because adults need clubs and fun too!) Check out all the upcoming workshops here.

About the Instructor

Elle Mitchell (she/her) is a multidisciplinaryartist and author of dark fiction, crip fic, and essays. She spends her downtime fighting for disability rights, researching, gaming, and eating more than her share of homemade baked goods (when her body allows). Being a woman with several invisible illnesses, she enjoys living a semi-horizontal life with her husband and spoiled furbutts in the PNW.

You can find her books and limited edition miniatures connected to them in her shop. Sign up for her newsletter to keep up to date with her goings on, receive a free horror short story, and get other exclusive content delivered to your inbox twice a month.
