Write deeper, write faster, write better. Discover how readers internalize story in heart and mind with Eric Witchey’s Fiction Fluency Seminars.
What is the Fiction Fluency Seminar Series?
Award-winning writer Eric Witchey’s Fiction Fluency Seminars begin with how readers read and how writers work then move on to mastery of the smallest line-by-line dramatic elements. Though each seminar can be taken alone, each seminar also builds on the last. From the smallest dramatic element, the seminars demonstrate how each larger dramatic element is built from, and in some ways is a reflection of, the previous. The seminars are like Russian dolls. Readers see the whole doll, the story or book, before seeing the smallest doll. Writers need to see the smallest doll in order to create the experience the reader has of the largest.
The series begins with the foundation of habits, and each seminar layers on a new level of complexity and control that allows the participants to acquire skills that will allow them to create professional-level flash, short stories, novelettes, novellas, or novels in any genre—and, yes, literary is a genre.
Fiction Fluency seminars combine Mr. Witchey’s practical experience publishing fiction in 12 genres with linguistic and cognitive science research on how readers internalize story in heart and mind. The seminars present practicable, executable skills for creation, analysis, and revision of short stories and novels.
The first group of three seminars in the program establish the theoretical and practical foundations of the program. Returning participants can choose to skip that group without impact to their experience of subsequent seminars. Of course, they are welcome if they want a refresher. New participants are encouraged to attend the first three.
